Riverdale Park’s Newest Green Space Helps Pollinators and Neighbors

A new green space in Riverdale Park is designed to help out the birds and the bees.

Located at 4702 Ravenswood Rd., Ravenswood Community Forest was painstakingly designed by Casey Trees to include native plants that are good for pollinators.

The green space got its start when Route 1 real estate agent Kayleigh Kulp acquired the quarter-acre property near the MARC station. She told the Hyattsville Wire she soon realized that “the neighborhood needed green space more than it needed another building.”

She was also inspired by her kids.

“We wanted our three kids to understand that building isn’t only about what can be demolished or monetized — it can also be about stewardship, restoration, ecology, and creating spaces where people feel connected to each other,” she told the Wire.

The land was then donated to Casey Trees as the first project of its kind in Prince George’s County. Staff came up with the design after getting feedback from neighbors and residents at the Riverdale Park Farmer’s Market.

The goal was to create a space that was helpful for local wildlife but also welcoming for residents walking past.

The forest officially opened a few weeks ago, with a plaque thanking the Kulp Munch Family and Amity Rose Properties. But Kulp said neighbors had been using the space ever since the plantings were done.
