Route 1 Musician Now Leading Acoustic Jam Sessions at Joe’s Movement Emporium

Route 1 music instructor Justin Heath will be teaching acoustic jamming at Joe’s Movement Emporium this fall.

Held at 3309 Bunker Hill Rd. in Mount Rainier, the classes are designed to teach musicians ages 12 and up with some basic competence how to play collaboratively in diverse genres, including bluegrass, old-time, blues and jazz.

Heath, who lives in the Woodridge neighborhood of D.C., has long done private teaching and led jam sessions in Tacoma Park, but he said he was looking to create more hands-on classes closer to home.

“I have a well established studio in Takoma Park and I love it there but I want to do more in the community where I live,” he told the Hyattsville Wire. “There is a lot of interest in art and music along the gateway corridor and I’m interested in making more opportunities for people to play music together.”

Heath said his favorite spots for live music on the Route 1 corridor are Maryland Meadworks, Streetcar 82 Brewing Co. and the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation in Hyattsville and the Hamlin Street Diner in nearby Brentwood.

“We really do have an amazing music scene in the Hyattsville area,” he said.

The Acoustic Jamming Class at Joe’s Movement Emporium will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Sept. 15.
