Facing Lower Ticket Sales, Greenbelt Cinema Looks for Alternate Funding
The historic Greenbelt Cinema has paused some specialty screenings as it struggles with lower movie ticket sales and higher costs due to inflation.
Executive Director Caitlin McGrath asked the Greenbelt City Council earlier this month for another $25,000 in this year’s budget to maintain programming such as a classic-movie series aimed at older customers, according to The Banner.
The city already budgeted $75,000 for the theater this year.
Several hundred residents have already signed a petition to restore specialty programs such as Cinema Classics, Cult Classics, Sunday Scaries, the Summer Concert Series and Reel Magic of the Holidays.
In a video posted on Instagram, McGrath said they are also working on a comprehensive strategic plan. That plan might include asking supporters to make more direct contributions.
Located at 129 Centerway in the Roosevelt Center in Greenbelt’s historic downtown, the theater opened in 1938. Since 2015, it has been run by the nonprofit Friends of Greenbelt Theatre.
