Drop In for Free Weekly Acupuncture at Joe’s Movement in Mount Rainier
A retired Hyattsville acupuncturist offers free stress reduction treatment each week at Joe’s Movement Emporium.
As part of a program run by Acupuncturists Without Borders of the National Capital Area, Alaine Duncan and other volunteers offer free acupuncture and bodywork services on Tuesdays at the Mount Rainier nonprofit.
Duncan, who has lived on the Route 1 corridor since 1979, told the Hyattsville Wire that she first became involved “at the other end of the needle” while receiving acupuncture to treat a chronic illness.
“I was so moved by my experience that I wanted to give it to others,” she told the Wire.
After earning a master’s degree in acupuncture, Duncan studied somatic experiencing, which helps survivors of stress and trauma through an integrated mind-body approach. She later helped establish an integrated wellness program at the D.C. Veterans Administration Hospital and worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She also wrote a book, “The Tao of Trauma.”
Since retiring in 2020, Duncan has continued volunteering, starting the program at Joe’s Movement in 2024, serving about two dozen people each week.
“I like to say that Joe’s helps keep the heart of our community in rhythm and on the beat,” Duncan said. “Our mission and theirs are closely aligned.”
The free acupuncture clinic is held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at Joe’s Movement at 3309 Bunker Hill Rd. in Mount Rainier. No appointment is necessary. Donations are welcome.
