Brentwood’s newest apartment building won’t just have solar power, it will also produce enough to make it essentially carbon-neutral.

Builders began installing panels on the roof of Studio 3807 this week, making it the latest project along the Route 1 corridor to have solar power.

It joins such places as Edmonston and Mount Rainier city halls, Franklins in Hyattsville, University Park Elementary School, the University Park Church of Brethren, the Severn Building at the University of Maryland, and the National Archives II and IKEA buildings in College Park.

The Renaissance Square Artists Housing in Hyattsville also has solar-heated water.

The building’s design is also centered on energy efficiency, with developers earning LEED- Gold certification, the second-highest rating for energy efficiency. The solar roof, once completed, will produce 106,400 kilowatts and provide most of the building’s energy needs.

In an interview with the Hyattsville Wire, Peter Siegel, CEO of Landex Development, which is developing Studio 3807 and the future Artisan 4100 down the street , said the air inside the building will be heated or cooled to 75 degrees, but residents can choose to pay more if they want it hotter or cooler than that.

“The point of the solar array and the heating and cooling system we put into the building is to reduce energy usage and reduce energy costs,” he said.

The building will also have two electric car charging stations available for residents and two for public use as well as high-efficiency Energy Star appliances. Siegel says they are slated to finish construction by Aug. 1, with a total of 147 units ranging from studios to 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments; 6,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space; and 3,000 square feet of artist studio space.

The the rooftop solar farm is slated to be completed and energized by August or September.
