Hyattsville’s retro wave got another boost last month when Cookie Wear opened.

Located on Farragut St. next to the Firehouse Lofts, the shop sells clothes from the 1960s through the 1990s as well as bespoke items with the same vibe.

Michelle Smith, who owns the new store along with her husband and three daughters as well as the space on Baltimore Ave. currently being occupied by the new Suffragette City vintage shop, said she was inspired by her relationship with her stepfather, who died of kidney failure in 1994.

“Anything and everything that we shared as far as fun and fashion — I use that as a platform to pay homage to him,” she told the Hyattsville Wire.

Like other retro and vintage sellers, she said that clothes from that era tend to be be made with higher standards, so they hold up, especially if cared for properly.

Like Tanglewood Works, Cookie Wear sells clothes from independent sellers, helping nurture a growing vintage and retro scene in in the arts district of Hyattsville.

“Our goal is to continue to build a relationship with the Hyattsville community and hope that everyone receives us and adores us as we love them,” she said.
