Hyattsville voters supported a referendum legalizing gay marriage by 10 percentage points more than the state as a whole.

With a historic gay-marriage law set to take effect next week in Maryland, the Hyattsville Wire decided to dig a little deeper into the election results from November.

Using this list of Hyattsville precincts, we added up the votes on the same-sex marriage referendum. Overall, the city’s voters supported the measure, 62 to 38 percent, or 3,358 votes to 2,032. That’s far ahead of the state as a whole, which backed it 52 to 48 percent. And it runs counter to Prince George’s County, which rejected it by eight-tenths of one percent.

One precinct, 16-03, which votes at Hyattsville Middle School and includes the new Arts District Hyattsville homes and much of the Historic District, backed the referendum by 69 percent.

As we’ve noted previously, Hyattsville has twice the national average of same-sex couples and is known as a gay-friendly community.
