Hyattsville Builds State’s First New Outdoor Gym

Hyattsville is the first city in Maryland to install a new modernized outdoor fitness center, part of a nationwide campaign.

Located at the 38th Avenue Neighborhood Park just west of Magruder Park, the fitness court features a full circuit workout including suspension rings, plyo boxes and pull-up bars, among other things. There are also plans in the works to install a shade cover over the gym, as recently mentioned in the Washington Post.

Made of weather-resistant materials in blue and silver, the fitness court is the latest from the National Fitness Campaign, a San Francisco-based group that has promoted public fitness since 1979. You have probably seen its original wood structures in parks before.

The campaign began rolling out the new design last year, and Hyattsville’s is one of the first 100 in the country. The city plans to add shading for the equipment and WiFi at the park, which is located just off the Northwest Branch Trail.

It’s a smart move for a community along the Route 1 corridor, which is currently seeing a boom in fitness centers ranging from kickboxing to Orangetheory to open barre.

The 32-foot-by-35-foot court is designed to allow multiple users at a single time while remaining compact enough to be installed in smaller neighborhood parks. Some towns run free or low-cost outdoor exercise clinics on the courts.

Users can also learn how to do a complete circuit on the equipment using the free Fitness Court app available for iPhone and Android.

The city is also installing some colorful new playground equipment right next to the fitness court to replace an existing play area.
