La Fondita: A Meat Lover’s Haven in Edmonston

If you’re craving a hearty meal, few places on the Route 1 corridor will fill you up like La Fondita at 4901 Decatur St in Edmonston.

A perennial favorite of Washington food critics, the Mexican restaurant is a paradise for meat lovers looking for an authentic dish.

For starters, there’s the tacos on house-made corn tortillas with grilled beef, beef tongue, chorizo sausage, chicken, two kinds of pork or even lamb. Topped with just cilantro, onion and lemon, the meat takes center stage.

If you’re looking for something even heartier, try the tortas, a popular Mexican street sandwich made with egg and chorizo, ham and cheese, or breaded beef or chicken.

There are also tostadas, quesadillas, enchiladas, chilaquiles and full plates of Mexican-style steak, carne asada or lamb with rice and beans. You can even buy lamb by the pound.

Located inside a plain-spoken house, La Fondita lives up to its name, which means the little restaurant. Apart from a jukebox in the corner, the interior is about as close to eating in your abuela’s living room as you can get, one of the reasons it’s a hotspot on Route 1’s taco corridor.
