The city of Mount Rainier is seeking an artist to design and paint a new mural on the recently renovated Singer Building.

In a posting on a public arts site, the city’s arts commission said that it will be accepting proposals for a mural on the front and side stucco facades of the building at 3300 Rhode Island Ave., which will soon be home to the Pennyroyal Station restaurant.

Up to three finalists who submit applications by next Tuesday, Jan. 7., will be given a $500 stipend to develop a proposal, and the finalist will be awarded $15,000.

“With a focus on highlighting public and business assets of Mount Rainier, the Arts Commission is seeking a contemporary artwork that will enrich our community,” the call for artists says. “We seek a project that will also enhance the visual experience and provide lasting inspiration for public involvement in the arts, while maintaining a commitment to quality and a positive impact on the community.”

The mural will join a number of others along the Route 1 corridor, including one highlighting endangered species in College Park, an Instagram-ready pair of butterfly wings in Riverdale Park and a graffiti-inspired underpass at the West Hyattsville Metro.
