A Washington teen-ager who trains at College Park’s Junior Tennis Champions Center won her first professional tennis title this weekend.

Fifteen-year-old Robin Montgomery took home $25,000 after defeating China’s You Xiaodi in a three-set match at the Oracle Pro Series in Las Vegas Sunday.

Montgomery first learned how to play tennis at the age of five through a community outreach program run by JTCC that provides tennis instruction for underserved communities.

Impressed with her potential and her drive, instructors invited her to train at JTCC. Ten years later, she is now ranked No. 5 worldwide in the 18-and-under rankings, and won the Orange Bowl, one of the most prestigious junior tennis tournaments in the world, in December.

JTCC is known for turning out top tennis players. Its 3,000 students over the years have included national junior champions, collegiate champions and pros, most notably Francis Tiafoe, who was recently featured in the first ever neighborhood briefing on Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and College Park that ran in the February issue of Washingtonian.
