UPDATE: Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has ordered all bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms to shut down by 5 p.m. today to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The order allows drive-thru, carryout and food deliveries to continue. This piece has been updated.

Time is running out for the greater Washington, D.C., area to contain the coronavirus.

Despite requests for social distancing to reduce transmission of the deadly virus, many D.C. bars and restaurants were packed over the weekend, as were some places along the Route 1 corridor which we saw posted on Instagram.

Unfortunately, that means many more people in our area will get sick — and die — who would not have. In response, D.C. is already limiting restaurants and bars and they’ve shut down nightclubs. And in addition to shutting down schools, NYC has closed all restaurants and bars to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The Centers for Disease Control advises Americans of all ages to strictly limit social activity. Even if you are young and healthy, you can be severely affected by coronavirus, or you could spread it to others without even showing symptoms.

Given the new developments over the weekend, please stay home and if you must eat out, order delivery — and ask them to leave it on your doorstep. Many businesses on the Route 1 corridor are changing how they can best serve their customers right now.

If they don’t offer delivery, buy a gift card or just pledge to eat there after everything has passed. But we at the Hyattsville Wire are asking you to please stay home and if you must go out, be sure to abide by the CDC recommendations including practicing social distancing.

And while the CDC has advised Americans not to gather in groups of more than 50, public health experts say that it’s advisable to skip even smaller gatherings at this point, and further restrictions may be coming.

Now is a good time for local businesses to think about how they can go virtual, either turning a restaurant into a drive-thru or delivery service or hosting yoga sessions online.

Here’s a quick rundown of restaurants along the Route 1 corridor that are still open and deliver. Let us know in the comments if we missed an area restaurants offering delivery.

Aladdin Sizzler in Mount Rainier is on DoorDash.

Busboys & Poets in Hyattsville delivers and has online ordering.

Caracas de Ayer (Cafe Azul) in Hyattsville is on Uber Eats and Postmates.

Denizens Brewing Co. in Riverdale Park has started a Beermobile that will bring six packs of its beer to homes in Riverdale Park and surrounding areas starting March 15. They’ll also accept take-out orders at their taproom and meet you curbside.

Dumm’s Pizza and Subs in Riverdale Park offers delivery by calling 301-277-2208 or ordering through Uber Eats, Grubhub or DoorDash.

Foodhini in Woodridge delivers but only in D.C. now. That may change. UPDATE! They now also deliver to Mount Rainier.

Franklins in Hyattsville is offering curbside drop-off from 11 a.m. to 9. p.m.

Little Minor Taco now offers text-to-orders with its new delivery service.

Maryland Meadworks in Hyattsville is offering the Meadman growler delivery service where you can have mead delivered to your door step.

Pizzeria Paradiso in Hyattsville is available on Uber Eats, DoorDash and Caviar.

Potomac Pizza in College Park offers delivery and online ordering.

Spice 6 food in Hyattsville is on Uber Eats, GrubHub and Caviar.

Taqueria Habanero in College Park is now closed until the pandemic ends.

Tara Thai in Hyattsville is on GrubHub.

Town Center Market now offers curbside pickup and delivery.

ZZ Pizza & Kabob in Mount Rainier offers delivery with online ordering.

There are also many other eateries, especially in College Park, that offer delivery, and you can search for them on the above platforms.

If you need to purchase food and other essentials, consider supporting the smaller grocers like Good Food Markets in Woodridge, D.C., The Glut Food Co-Cop in Mount Rainier, and even Yes! Organic Market in Hyattsville which don’t have as much foot traffic and may provide more opportunity for social distancing than the larger grocery stores. Yes! Organic mentioned in an Instagram post today that they got new deliveries of fresh produce and meat and still have toilet paper as well. Ceci’s Tienda Latina in Riverdale Park is open daily and has plenty of nonperishables, cleaning and household items, snacks and some produce in stock as well.

ECO City Farms in Edmonston remains open with more intense washing of fruits and vegetables and for now will pack CSA bags for you for pick up instead of letting customers pick their own.

Love Yoga Studio in Hyattsville has transitioned to only offering live online yoga classes at least until March 20.

My Dead Aunt’s Books in Hyattsville has an online catalog thru abebooks that can be accessed from its webpage www.mydeadauntsbooks.com. Its online store is still named Robert Harper Books.  There are some 12000 books in stock and orders ship the next day.

Numi Yoga in College Park is livestreaming classes online, posting videos on their website and sending daily meditation and breathing emails.

Three Little Birds Sewing Co. is closed until further notice but is offering free local delivery (within 5 miles), free shipping within the DMV area (see previous post for details), as well as curbside pickup.

Also, be sure to check out our free forum (no need to sign up or subscribe) on the impact of the coronavirus on the Route 1 corridor for the community to discuss and share information and ideas surrounding the effects of the pandemic in area, such as closings and cancellations, child care issues and other concerns.

Already one resident has offered to help with grocery shopping for those with pre-existing medical conditions or the elderly who do not want to leave the house.
