Maryland Meadworks is looking to expand its mead delivery service to Washington, D.C., by the end of the month.

The Hyattsville meadery began offering curbside pickup and free delivery of 32-ounce growlers to neighboring towns along Route 1 last month amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Owner Kenneth Carter told the Hyattsville Wire that after his wife’s employer bought a growler for all of the people in the company, he received guidance from D.C.’s Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration regarding making deliveries to D.C. residents.

He now hopes to expand the service to other interested D.C. residents by April 25.

“I am also trying to put together a group of experienced bike messengers to do our D.C. deliveries,” he said. “There will be a small delivery fee that will go directly to these bike mead men and maidens.”

Deliveries would be made to D.C. residents once a week on Saturdays.

Carter said that that Maryland Meadworks will probably continue local growler deliveries even after coronavirus-related shutdowns end in order to offset an anticipated short-term downturn in taproom attendance once he is able to reopen.

To order a growler for pickup or delivery, go to this form online. Free contactless delivery is currently available in Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, North Brentwood, Brentwood, Mt. Rainier, Cheverly, Cottage City, Bladensburg, Colmar Manor, Edmonston, University Park, and College Park.
