Riverdale Park residents have raised more than $9,000 this month to buy meals from local restaurants and give them to neighbors in need.

Since April 1, an effort known as Greater Riverdale Cares has raised money on GoFundMe to buy meals from Banana Blossom Bistro, Denizen’s Brewing Co., Dumms Pizza and Subs, 2Fifty Texas BBQ and Riviera Tapas for donation.

“Together we can keep our Greater Riverdale kitchens open, workers employed and provide healthy, nutritious food to neighbors in need,” they note on the fundraising page.

A donation of $10 feeds one person; $40, one family; $120, three families. The meals are for families in need in the greater Riverdale Park area, or ZIP code 20737.

Greater Riverdale Cares held a food distribution earlier this morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Landover Hills, east of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, in conjunction with Brighter Bites, the Capital Area Food Bank, the Hyattsville CDC, Coastal Sunbelt Produce and County Council member Dannielle Glaros.

Food will also be distributed Saturday, April 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at United Baptist Church at 7701 Riverdale Road in New Carrollton, and on Saturday, May 2, at St. Mary’s, at 7301 Annapolis Road in Landover Hills.

Greater Riverdale Cares was organized by Thomas Wertz of the Central Kenilworth Avenue Revitalization Community Development Corporation, which promotes economic development in the greater Riverdale Park area. Glaros, SEED Food Distribution, Kaiser Permanente’s Place-Based Initiative, Christian Life Center and real estate and brokerage firm Go Brent are also partners.
