Prince George’s County Public Schools announced it will be entirely online from August 31 through at least January 2021 as the county remains a hotspot for coronavirus in Maryland.

School system officials said they will reassess the situation in early December and decide whether to continue with entirely online classes or shift to a hybrid model with some in-person instruction in the spring.

The school system will ensure that all students have access to a computer or tablet and wi-fi at home and a program to help those in need with lunch will continue.

In a recent survey, 46 percent of parents of children in Prince George’s public schools said they want to continue learning at home, 42 percent wanted a hybrid and 12 percent wanted students to return to school full-time.

School districts around the greater D.C. area are approaching the fall with different plans, with most either starting all virtually or holding in-person classes on alternating days.
