A Running List of Where to Shop on Route 1 for the Holidays

This holiday season, shopping locally could help keep your local artists and independent retailers in business.

With the coronavirus pandemic hurting small businesses around the country, now is a good time to check out some of the local places that make the Route 1 corridor a destination.

Forty Third Place: A woodworking studio in Hyattsville where you can purchase a variety of handmade wooden trays, furniture and wall art online here.

Tanglewood Works: The Hyattsville store sells homemade candles topped with Vigilante coffee beans, among lots of other handmade items such as original art, upcycled jewelry and restored furniture, hot plates, ornaments and other speciality items all made by owner Sue Older-Mondeel and her team. Hope Honey Farm: The beekeepers offer handmade soaps, lip balms and honey made in Hyattsville, available at Franklins and Whole Foods in Riverdale Park and online here.

Music and Books

Blue Plains: An indie rock band with roots in Hyattsville has their music available for purchase here.

Eric Maring: This College Park-based musician recently released two albums, one which is aimed at children. Both are available to purchase on his website.

Mary Amato: This Hyattsville-based award-winning children’s and young adult book author has written several books, all of which are available for purchase on Amazon.

Monica Hesse: A University Park-based author who has written several books, including most recently “They Went Left,” all of which are available on Amazon.

Nick Pysenson: A University Park resident is author of “Spying on Whales: The Past, Present and Future of the World’s Largest Animals,” an account of his own research, including time spent at the Smithsonian’s warehouses in Prince George’s County.

Paint Branch Creek: Homegrown American and folk band out of College Park sells its album online here.

Patti Kim: A University Park-based author has written several books, including “I’m Ok,” which are available to purchase on Amazon.

Wolf Bahren: The pen name of University Park resident Kristi Bahrenburg Janzen, Bahren’s latest is “Source of Deceit,” a thriller about a journalist.

Curtis Ramsey-Lucas: The University Park resident edited “#INTHISTOGETHER,” a collection of essays about “ministry in times of crisis.”
