According to an article today in the Washington Post, the planned Whole Foods Market in Riverdale Park is set to begin construction next week with doors to open in late 2015.

The new grocery store would be situated less than a mile from the Arts District.

The new gourmet food store is part of the Cafritz Property at Riverdale Park’s planned $250 million development effort, which will include 1,000 multi-family housing units, a 120-room hotel, over 20,000 square feet of office space, and more than 160,000 square feet of retail space on a 37-acre site along Route 1.

The project has faced pushback from nearby residents and some elected officials who argue the new effort would make traffic worse.

With plans for Pizza Paradiso at the new Art Works Now Studio School opening in Hyattsville and the upcoming Safeway project at University Town Center, residents of the area will have some more fine food options nearby.

This will be the first Whole Foods Market for Prince George’s County.
