New Mount Rainier Yoga Studio Takes a Meditative Approach

A new Mount Rainier yoga studio is sticking close to its roots in meditation and deep breathing.

Ocean Jasper Yoga Studio at 3305 Perry St offers classes in vinyasa yoga, a standard form that pays close attention to breathing; kemetic yoga, which includes deep breathing and meditation techniques; and yin yoga, which involves holding poses for longer.

The studio, which opened in August amid stay-at-home orders due to the pandemic, is located above Pennyroyal Station and offers mindful meditation, chakra balancing and crystal sound bowl meditation.

Founder Ariana Lee-Kane told the Hyattsville Wire that the studio’s approach is unusual at a time when yoga has become part of mainstream fitness.

“It’s the intention behind the practice that makes us unique,” she said. “We offer a peaceful space designed to nurture and strengthen your mind, body, and soul.”

Lee-Kane, who previously worked in pediatric medical education, educational research and facility affairs, named the studio for her favorite crystal, ocean jasper, which she said helps ease tension and reduce stress.

She’s certainly had some stress of her own, first as she debated whether to postpone opening due to the coronavirus pandemic, and since has modified classes and set up preventive guidelines for health safety.
