Curators from the newest major art museum in the United States stopped by Hyattsville recently looking for fresh talent.

Funded by a Walmart heiress, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark., is hoping to expand its collection with works from underrecognized artists.

Two curators planning to select the artists went on a road trip to visit many of the candidates in person, according to a recent article in the New York Times:

The goal of their unusual art hunt — an old-fashioned, Kerouacian canvass of the country — is to find 100 underrecognized artists, culled from a list of more than 10,000, to feature in September in an ambitious show that will represent Ms. Walton’s first attempt to plant her institution’s flag firmly in the world of contemporary art.

The trip included the usual stops as New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as less-frequented places like Lawrence, Kan., and Santa Fe, N.M. The curators visited 25 artists in Washington, D.C.; Alexandria, Va.; Richmond, Va.; and Hyattsville.

Even if none of the local artists makes it into the show, it’s clear that Hyattsville’s arts scene is literally on the map.
