A Hyattsville charity is helping thousands of Afghan refugees who will be coming to the greater D.C. area over the next few days and weeks.

Lutheran Social Services, which has one of its three resettlement centers on East West Highway in Hyattsville, is working with about 2,500 refugees coming to the D.C. area as part of Operation Allies Refuge.

The group will help them to find housing and job placement as well as provide cultural orientation and individual case management as they settle.

CEO Kristyn Peck told the Washingtonian that the group needs help paying for transportation from Fort Lee, south of Richmond; gift cards and sponsorships from hotels, especially those with suites for families; and cash donations to continue providing help.

You can normally donate to Lutheran Social Services online here, although the donation site is temporarily unavailable right now. Instead, you can donate through their fundraiser on Facebook. So far, it has raised about $2,500 out of a goal of $50,000.

You can also donate to the International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring, Catholic Charities in Arlington and the Ethiopian Community Development Council, which are also working to resettle Afghan refugees.
