A popular D.C. chain that sells locally made products is opening its first Maryland-themed store in College Park.

Located in the ground-floor retail space of the new $47 million city hall at 4500 Knox Rd., Shop Made in Maryland will feature everything from prints from local artists to home goods like mugs, travel bags, candles and jewelry — all from Maryland makers.

Owner Stacey Price opened the first Shop Made in D.C. store in 2017, expanding to four locations in Dupont CircleGeorgetown, the Wharf and Embassy Row and planning Shop Made in Virginia locations in Richmond and Alexandria.

The shop’s buy local ethic became something of a rallying cry during the coronavirus pandemic, even inspiring then Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to stop by last November.

To build out the new Maryland shop’s interior, the city will give Price a $75,000 grant from federal pandemic recovery funds according to Route 1 Reporter.

In addition to retail sales, the shop will also feature a coffee bar and have beer and wine service in the evenings and hold classes ranging from $20 to $85 on arts and crafts such as painting watercolors, making bath bombs and screenprinting.

Price, who was awarded Small Business Owner of the Year in 2020 by the Washington Business Journal, has more than 5,000 products for sale from 200 makers for sale in her D.C. shop, which began selling more online as well during the pandemic.

College Park’s new $47 million city hall, which will be mostly complete by the end of the month, will have four retail spaces. It is part of the city and the University of Maryland’s goal to become one of the country’s top-20 college towns.
