A Hyattsville farmer is offering a weekly flower share program to residents of the Route 1 corridor.
Since the summer of 2020, Cristina Flores has grown different flowers on a grassy lot near Route 1 owned by a neighbor and sold them through a community-supported agriculture program at her business Flowers x Flores.
For $280, customers get a weekly bouquet of seasonal flowers from May 17 through July 5 through a no-contact porch pickup in University Park or the Columbia Heights and Petworth neighborhoods of D.C.
Flores told the Hyattsville Wire that the Route 1 corridor is a great place for a florist.
“This area lends itself to growing a great variety of flowers,” she said. “As early as May the garden I tend is full of buds slowly beginning to bloom.”
Flores also sells flowers for special occasions and individual buyers during the growing season and hopes to drop by a farmer’s market in D.C. this spring.
For those looking to grow their own flowers, she recommends planting using the triangular method and trying to plant in clusters of plants by varieties.
