Hyattsville Eateries Named D.C.’s ‘Best Mexican’

Two Mexican restaurants in Hyattsville were recognized as among the best in the greater D.C. area.

The Washingtonian named Taqueria el Mexicano on Riggs Road and Taqueria La Placita on Edmonston Road to a list of the best restaurants in D.C. to get Mexican breakfast and brunch. Only nine restaurants made the list.

The article praised Taqueria el Mexicano of its “Mexican soul food.”

“The mole poblano from owners Bernardo and Clara Vargas’s native Puebla is reason alone to go, but you’ll also find breakfast specials like chilaquiles,” noted author Anna Spiegel. “Pay attention to the handwritten specials board for treats such as baleadas, a Honduran dish of thick flour tortillas stuffed with beans, cheese, and avocado.”

The taqueria previously landed on the 20152016 and 2017  “Best Cheap Eats” lists compiled by the Washingtonian and earned reverent praise from a Washington Post restaurant critic in 2016, especially for its mole. (We’ve also tagged it as “hidden gem.”)

The restaurant is located along Hyattsville’s internationally diverse University Boulevard, which stretches from the back side of the University of Maryland toward Langley Park.

Meantime, the Washingtonian praised Edmonston’s Taqueria La Placita as a great “no frills” spot.

“We love the pork-heavy tacos at this no-frills taqueria, but morning calls for something milder,” Spiegel wrote. “Try the tamales stuffed with chicken and salsa verde, accompanied by a glass of atole (sweet corn juice).”

That taqueria has also been highlighted by the Post for “Washington area’s best weekday breakfasts” and critic Tom Sietsema’s “cheap eats” list.

The two restaurants are yet another reason the Route 1 corridor is a growing foodie haven.
